Director of Development

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing Caring for Friends fundraising including the major gifts program, the annual fund, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The Director works closely with the Chief Executive Officer in all development and fundraising endeavors.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Meet prospective donors and cultivate supporters on a continual basis to establish effective communications with them
  • Grow a major gifts program, including identification and solicitation of major donors, building the potential network
  • Work closely with grant-seeking staff, including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements
  • Build the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts such as bequest expectancies
  • Direct the annual fund program, including mailings and annual fundraising drives
  • Direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives
  • Propose and manage fundraising events
  • Oversees prospect research and follows through on leads
  • Work closely with Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director of Communications & Corporate Relations, and Board of Directors
  • Coordinates fundraising database and donor tracking systems, develops market prospects, prospective individual and corporate donors, and documents success with new donors and contributions
  • Oversee creation of publications to support fundraising activities
  • Maintain gift recognition programs and acknowledgement and gratitude to donors
  • Performs other related duties as requested


  • Five years of experience managing development in a professional setting, nonprofit experience preferred 
  • Relevant college degree OR equivalent professional experience 
  • Mission-driven, results-oriented professional
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills
  • Adept communicator who exercises good judgement
  • Have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly major gift fundraising
  • Experience working with fundraising software and CRMs, such as Network for Good, SalesForce, DonorPerfect
  • Works well as part of a team and independently
  • Has the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships
  • Is a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
  • Highly organized individual who follows through on tasks and goals
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening skills
  • Must be available for occasional night and/or weekend work
  • Must comply with organization’s COVID-19 vaccination policies
